Dear Friend,

Tasha’s Story

Tasha is a single mother and 36-year-old veteran who served actively in the United States Air Force for over 7 years. Tasha decided to join the Air Force, putting college on hold, to follow in the footsteps of her father who was an Army Veteran. Tasha married a fellow soldier and after becoming pregnant with her first son, completed her service in the airforce.

After a divorce and resulting financial strains, Tasha found herself on the verge of homelessness. Unwilling to give up her children or succumb to homelessness, Tasha moved her family into her mother's home. With guidance and support from her caseworkers at the Long Beach VA, Tasha was referred to Military Women in Need and quickly contacted us regarding her situation.

Holidays in a New Home

Tasha received a VASH Voucher and was approved for a 2 bedroom apartment in Anaheim for her and her two children. Only one thing stood between Tasha and Christmas in a new home for her family – a security deposit of $500. MWIN provided the security deposit through our Emergency Subsidies program, but we didn't stop there.

A Special Gift for Tasha and Her Family

Although Tasha, like many of our clients, was working, she still had great difficulties making ends meet and did not have money for basic life necessities like a refrigerator. Because of this, she and her children would take an ice chest to the market every day in order to buy fresh food in small amounts. This posed potential health hazards, and created larger food costs. This week, through MWIN's Care Club program, Tasha was provided with a recycled refrigerator. She and her children delighted the MWIN team by leaving a message telling us, "We love the refrigerator! We are so grateful!"

For the very first time, Tasha and her 16-year-old and 7-year-old children will celebrate the holidays together in a permanent home in front of their very own Christmas tree.

Because of your support through Military Women in Need, she and many other women are able to escape the cycle of homelessness and poverty so many of our female veterans struggle with.

MWIN cannot do it alone… we need your support to help Lorna and others like her.

The majority of our beneficiaries live on less than $950 a month; less than $12,000 a year.   In most instances, MWIN is the last resort for help and a catalyst for sustainable life change.  Through your generous gifts, Military Women In Need directly served 150 female veterans last year.  This year, with our troops returning from Iraq, our goal is to directly serve 240 women!

During this Holiday Season, as we count our blessings, we thank you for your support of Military Women In Need and the families we serve. We ask that you continue your generosity and make a gift that will assist Tasha, her children and other military families like them.

Together we can make a difference one veteran and family at a time.

Sincerely,
